The [Incomplete] Colours of Mexico

“The Incomplete Colours of Mexico" was a solo exhibition presented at the Sebastian Foundation in Mexico City in March 2019. A series of paintings on wooden canvases that transform into chairs. What seems like a formal gesture is really a question: do you sit on reality or do you look at it head on? When you sit on something you cannot see it; when you stand up and face it, it changes. The transformation of the canvas into a chair is not accidental — it is an analogy for the way we inhabit, ignore or confront that which holds us up.

The paintings recreate collective Mexican scenes and symbols — loteria characters, familiar images, shared iconographies — to question the layers of contradictory realities that have been built over time. A reflection on what Mexico has chosen to see of itself and what it has preferred to leave incomplete.

Mexico, always colorful, always incomplete.
