Sessions With Carolina
Project type
Portraits
Date
2021
Location
Mexico City
The following works are the result of sessions carried out during 2021 with Carolina, a Mexican woman of around seventy years old. This work seeks to explore the surrender to old age through Carolina's body. In her youth, Carolina was accustomed to her physical beauty granting her a privileged place in society — she once ate for free at a restaurant when she was mistaken for a famous actress; her blue eyes in a country as racist and classist as Mexico awarded her a place of honor in this imaginary aristocracy.
Carolina is free and has no intention of enslaving herself to a hair dye; so when gray hair flooded her head, she transitioned from object of desire to object of disposal. The society and the lovers who had so eagerly privileged her withdrew their sponsorship and displaced her to the category of "old woman" — and old women, as everyone knows, can no longer see, can no longer walk, can no longer hear and can no longer understand anything. She sees, walks, hears and understands, but has decided to use a cane to go out into the street and snatch the last privilege this ungrateful society grants her: skipping the line at the bank.
